About me

Born in Szeged, Hungary, and based in Budapest, Krisztina Erdei is a photographer, visual artist, researcher, and writer whose work combines documentary photography, moving image, installation, and oral history. She studied Philosophy at the University of Szeged and earned a DLA in Multimedia Art at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design with the dissertation Struggle for Your Story: Memory Studies and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century. She is currently pursuing doctoral research in art history at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest.

Erdei develops long-term, research-based projects that explore memory, labour, social inequality, and the politics of place. Working collaboratively with the communities she photographs, she combines interviews, archival research, portraiture, installation, moving image, and found objects to construct multilayered narratives that challenge simplified representations. Rather than offering definitive conclusions, her works bring together multiple perspectives and invite viewers to actively negotiate relationships between personal experience and broader social, political, and historical processes. In this way, interpretation becomes an essential part of the work itself, transforming the audience from observers into participants in the construction of meaning.

Her work has been exhibited internationally since 2002, including at the Prague Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney, Imago Lisboa, and Fotofestiwal Łódź, among numerous museums, galleries, and festivals in Europe.
